Lots of news for everyone

Well a lot has happened over the last few weeks. Let’s get you somewhat up to date on my world:

Tribe-K is going to be holding official classes soon. Sorry guys, no more last minute freebies (okay, maybe). Expect the class schedule to be posted here and on the site.

Cameron Smith and Luis Cruz have joined the ranks as Candidate Instructors in Tribe-K. They are on the way to being full-fledged certified instructors in the various arts that we teach.

One of my entries, 1000 Punches, has received some heavy traffic thanks to Brian Kagen and Aikido Journal. I have noticed a lot of reading on some of my other entries too. I even got a few comments. I have been pondering making a regular “technique of the week” sort of thing on my blog, either as a post with embedded photos, or as a .pdf for free download. I have put things like that up in the past, but got little or no feedback. So instead of hunting for feedback, I’ll just put them up and go from there. Sounds good?

I was robbed at gunpoint this past St. Patrick’s Day. Suffice to say that I was completely unharmed, minus some dollars and pieces of plastic bearing my name. The experience was rather infuriating, considering that the two ruffians that robbed me, were it not for the firearms, I would have hospitalized them. Oh well. One thing came to mind while I was laying face down on the pavement, and since then: I was rather calm about the whole thing. I don’t pretend to understand why, and I won’t try to tell that after my years of training, blah blah blah, but it has reminded me of one of my favorite quotes from Morihei Ueshiba:

Your spirit is the true shield.

I don’t know if he said that first. I read an interview with an instructor who learned the same thing while doing spiritual training. I like the way this sounds also:

When you have spiritual protection you don’t need martial protection

I think what that means, especially for us so-called “martial artists” is that we MUST attain a peaceful state of mind.  It’s more important than being able to break someone’s neck.

On a lighter note, the new Portishead, THIRD, is nice, nice, nice.

I have very little interest in martial arts and still can’t remember how I stumbled upon your site but well the internet is just random… anyway, I bookmarked your site and for some reason read your posts with interest… And was in to New Order VERY long ago…
